#MyMeno by Susan Foynes
I’m 47 and perimenopausal. My symptoms probably started around age 44 when my already short cycle started becoming even shorter. This means I have a heavy 5 day period every 18 days or so. I was worried about this irregular bleeding so paid privately to have my bloods analysed and also had an internal scan to rule out anything untoward.
Other things I’ve noticed? There’s a definite change in my mood. I’ve never been the calmest person but now I can fly into a rage at the smallest of things. I’m also more anxious than I used to be and generally a bit more tired. Oh, and whilst I have always loved a list, my lists now have lists!
The hardest thing for me (and my family!) to deal with is the grumpiness and added anxiety but on a positive note, 47 year old me really doesn't give a toss what anyone thinks. If you asked me what has helped I’d tell you in no uncertain terms: yoga, yoga and yoga! Viridian Female complex capsules and getting extra magnesium and vitamin Bs have also been useful.
In retrospect there’s nothing really that I wished I known earlier - there's such a vast range of symptoms and you’re not going to get them all - but I do wish I’d cottoned on to the benefits of doing yoga regularly sooner. Feeling stronger really helps.
My advice to other women would be to be kind to yourself and do something that gives you headspace away from family, work and the endless mothering duties. Perimenopause is a time of great change but there are lots of things you can do to smooth the way. For me, eating well and keeping fit are key.
